James Black was a blacksmith by trade. In 1830 he made a knife for then
frontierman, James Bowie, who later died at the Alamo fighting for the freedom of
Texas. James wife Ann died 1 month after her last child was born leaving James
to raise 5 children. James Black and his father-in-law William Shaw had an
argument later and James Black lost nearly all his eyesite and his craftmanship.
He traveled north for an expert doctor only to return and find his 5 children
and his father-in-law were gone and didn't know where. William Shaw had taken
his grandchildren and his own nine children and moved to Alto, Cherokee Co.,
Tx. where they lived. James Black never saw his children ever again.
James Black died on Jun 22, 1872 in Washington, Ark. living with Dan Jones,
who later became the governor of Arkansas. The  Arkansas Gazette, Sunday,
June 30, 1872, James Black, often called "Blind Black", reported the
celebrated maker of the first bowie knife, died at  the residence of Col D W Jones
in Washington, Ark. on Friday morning of last week.  Dan Jones says
James Black died on June 22, 1872.
