Lorna,
After reading the will of Adam Black, I concluded his daugther referred to as Eliza Ann McCown was not the Eliza Black who married Martin Snodgrass, Jr. Please refer to my message "Eliza Black and Martin VanBuren Snodgrass, Jr. of VA & WV 1845-1891" which I then posted on this message board and also on the Black Family Genealogy Forum at Genealogy.com.
I then got the following reply for Arlin Benjamin:
"My records from LDS files show that Eliza Black (b. 26 January 1826 in Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virgina) was indeed the daughter of Adam Black (b. 14 January 1779 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia and d. 1859 in Cabell County, West Virginia) and Elizabeth Green Cockburn (b. 14 February 1783 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia and d. after 1863 in Cabell County, West Virginia and married Adam Black on 9 July 1805 in Sinking Creek, Greenbrier County, West Virginia). Eliza married Martin Van Buren Snodreass, Jr., the son of Martin, Sr., and Ester Bland. The lineage for Eliza Black back in time is Adam Black/Elizabeth Cockburn, James M. Black/Jane Sharp, Samuel Black/Jane Porter, John Black/Margaret Gordon, James Black/Unknown Spouse, and Ian Black/Unknown Spouse. This takes you back to about 1640 with Ian born in Scotland with most of the others being from County Down, Ireland. Since this Black Family follows somewhat traditional migration from Scotland to Irela!
nd to Virginia I doubt that Eliza had little, if any, American Indian ancestry but would normally be classified as Scotch-Irish. Hope this helps some and let me know if I can be of further assistance."
Based on your information of Adam Black's family, what do you know about his daughter Eliza?
Thanks in advance on any thoughts regarding this issue. I seem to be at the "brick wall" in researching my wife's 3rd-great-grandmother who married Martin Snodgrass, Jr.
