Albuquerque Journal - September 19, 2003
Mary " Frances" Black Baca aka "Kiki", died September 17, 2003 in Albuquerque,NM. Frances was born April 11, 1910 in San Pedro, NM to Joseph T. Black and Ljenia Montano. After the death of her mother, she helped her father raise two brothers. Upon eighth grade graduation, she went to work at Hanns Dept. Store in Albuquerque. She married Jose Cunningham Baca on August 16, 1928. They ran a coal, wood and service station in Albuquerque until 1942 when they made Gallup their home where she resided until 1993. Frances was deeply committed to her faith, family and extended family, which was demonstrated in the raising of her children and nephew, Santiago Black. She spent many hours volunteering as a Cathedral HS Panther Booster member and at her church. Her grandchildren loved to play sick in order to spend a day of pampering at "Kiki's" house. She was a source of strength and comfort and loved to celebrate each new addition to the family as a blessing. Her home and kitchen were a!
lways open; a well-know fact not only to her family, but also their friends who seem to "happen by" when she made her famous tortillas, cinnamon rolls, rice pudding and Sunday night pancakes. She spent the early morning with her breakfast in bed as she mediated on the Lord's word and prayed the Rosary; this was a special time that her grandchildren loved being a part of. She was a lady of fashion who enjoyed sewing and knitting stylish clothing and blankets for family members. She loved to garden, tinker in her yard, and was no stranger to a hammer and nail. She is survived by her daughter, Jessie Quinones of Gallup; sons, Ben B. Baca and wife, Dora of Albuquerque and Jack B. Baca and wife, Claudette of Raisin City, CA, Louise Lane, mother of Ben's children; 17 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and God Children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose; son, Alejandro; daughter, Mary; father, Jos!
eph; mother, Ljenia; father-in-law, Alejandro Baca; mother-in-law, Mar
ia Agueda Cunningham; sisters, Mary Griego and Ramona Burkholder; and brothers, Joseph T. Black, Genaro Black and Fred Black. A Mass and Celebration of the life of our beloved mother and Kiki will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup, NM. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Joel Quinones, Joseph Baca, Stephen Baca, John Matthew Fuhs, III, Christopher Ortega and Michael Sanchez. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a foundation dedicated to the cure of Parkinson's Disease, or a charity of your choice. Rollie Mortuary 401 East Nizhoni Gallup, NM 87301
