Our family in New Zealand would greatly appreciate any assistance with
tracing our Isle of Mull, Scotland ancestry.
My great grandfather was Hugh Black (b. 28/8/1843, Isle of Mull) whose
father was Donald Black (blacksmith and possible policeman) and mother
Margaret McDougall. Donald remarried causing a conflict resulting in Hugh
working his way shipboard c1860 to Australia and then to New Zealand in
1865. Hugh was the seventh born and his children had a 1st cousin (in
Scotland) called John McLean.
Hugh's children, born in New Zealand were: Donald, Charles, Jessie,
Malcolm, James, Isabella, Margaret McInnes and Hugh. Margaret's middle name
of McInnes derives from probably the McDougall side of the family.
As many McLucas families changed their name to McDougall at this time,
Margaret McDougall may have been born a McLucas.
We understand that there are still Black's resident on Mull. We are
currently attempting to contact the owners of Knockan cottage which is in
Black ownership. We have also been in contact with Nancy Black of Oban,
Scotland. We would be thankful for any information on any of the above or
other contact's for interested Black's on Mull.
