I also have family that immigrated from Germany (Alsaice/Lorraine area). Two brothers came to US in about 1820, last name Schwartz. One brother, name unknown, went to California and was killed in a gunfight(Family story, not verified by fact). The other changed his name to Black, John Elnathan Black and married Emily Easten in York County, South Carolina around 1819 to 1820. They had a son, John Ellis Black, b. June 19, 1820, & a daughter Mary Elizabeth Black, b. unknown ~1821. John Elnathan Black is my gggGrandfather, John Ellis Black is my ggGrandfather. Here is the lineage back to 1820:
John Elnathan Black
!
John Ellis Black
!
Leroy Bond Black
!
Avery Oscar Black
!
Lorin Avery Black, Sr.
!
Lorin Avery Black, Jr. (Me)
!
Christopher Alan Black/Stephen Paul Black
!
Joshua Martin Black (Son of Chris)

If you find any connections to Schwartz familys in the Alsaice/Lorraine areas of Germany, I would like to hear from you. This is a coal mining area, thus the name Black in German.
