James Madison Black was born 11 January 1870 according to an entry in the family bible of his sister Mary Cornelia Adderton. Family tradition says his parents were Calvin and Betty Black; he was born at Salisbury, NC; he was orphaned at 6; he had a brother Robert Lee, a half brother Cicero and a sister who married an Adderton. His obituary mentions that he was proceeded in death by three brothers and one sister but does not gives names.
He left to go out on his own at an early age and worked in the mines near Birmingham, Alabama. He moved to Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois in 1891. James Madison Black and Jane "Jennie" Atkinson were married 14 November 1893 at the home of her father William Atkinson in Jacksonville. They moved to Cotter, AR in 1907 and to Coffey Co., KS in 1912. He died 8 July 1957 at Burlington, KS.
One brother was Robert Lee Black who lived in Chicago. The 1900 census gives his birth info as b. May 1874, NC. He died 14 March 1941 at Cook Co., IL and lived at Elgin, IL. He was married twice and had two daughters. Both his wives were named Mary.
His sister Mary Cornelia Black (Carroll) (b. 18 Apr 1862, d. 16 Mar 1903) m. John Stephen Adderton on 2 Dec 1883. They lived at Jackson Hill, Davidson Co., NC when their first daughter Bertie Lou was born 2 June 1889. Mary Cornelia was adopted by Ealie Carroll (or took the Carroll surname) after her parents died according to information passed down in their family.
The 1880 Rowan Co., Locke Twp., NC census lists a James Black 9, in the household of Alison Overcash; Lindsey Black 24, in the household of Jacob Fisher; Nannie Black 18, Robert Lee Black 7 in the household of David Leazer; and Mary C. Carroll 18 in the household of Peter Goodman.
The 1870 Rowan Co., Providence Township, NC census lists a family headed by Amanda Black 28, with Elizabeth 22, Linza 13, Cicero 11, Nancy 9, Cornelia 9, James 2, and Calvin 37, millwright, deceased November (1869) of typhoid fever.
The 1850 census for Davidson Co, NC (Southern Div.) shows a household headed by Barsheba Black 41 with a Calvin 19 and two Adderton families as neighbors.
Any assistance to help me solve the relationships and family ties would be very much appreciated.
Rich
