REDDING (Shasta County)- May 4, 1923- Franklin Black, minder and soldier in the Civil War, committed suicide yesterday evening in a rooming house where he had been rooming for a year.
He placed the muzzle of a revolver in his mouth and pulled the trigger. The bullet went through his head.
It is recalled by women of the neighborhood that they heard a shot about 4:00, but no attention was paid to it.
L.F. Jones, another old soldier, called at 8 o'clock in the evening to see how his old comrade was getting along. The door was pushed open and there was Black, sitting dead in his chair with a revolver in his right hand.
The old veteran has been in poor health for weeks, being troubled by asthma. For years and years Black was a miner living near Buckeye. He inveriably came to Redding to observe Memorial Day. About a year ago, he came to Redding to make his home. The deceased was a naive of Missouri, about 80 years *.
