I found this listing from the 1880 Census on the FamilySearch.org site for John A. Black. It must be the right person. It has the right birth date <1851>, the right census location and the right names for wife and children (although the dates for Harrison make him the oldest son). Still no name for the parents, but at least we know the father was born in Germany and the mother in Kentucky.
