My gggrandfather was John Black. His wife was Mary(maiden name unkown). They had 2 children, a son George Black, and a daughter Elizabeth Black. John and Mary settled in Virginia sometime in the late 1700's. Where they came from in not known. John was killed while on a hunting trip about 1798. Mary and the 2 small chihldren joined a wagon train of settlers and went south through KY and on into northern TN. They settled at Sugar Grove in Sumner Co. TN. just south of Scottsville in Allen Co.KY. This is one of the earliest settlements in Sumner Co. TN. There was a couple more settlements in that area," Turner's Station " and " Little Trammel Creek ". Mary must have either been pregnant at the time John was killed it is not clear but at any rate she had 2 daughters, maybe twins and their names are Eliza Black and either Linda or Malinda Black. Mary remarried after settleing in TN. to a man named Jesse Rippy who was a widower with 3 boys. Mary's 2 daughters married 2 of Jesse's s!
ons later at some point in time.
George Black (1796-1867), John and Mary's son married a young lady named Eliza Anderson who was the orphan daughter of a Captian Andy Anderson. George and Eliza had 11 children. Their names are:
1. Francis b. 1829 m. Drury Perry, buried at Chapel Hill, KY
2. Levi (1830-1868) m. Lucindia Carter (1834-1868) Odin, IL.
3. Alfred (1831-1861) died from measles while in Civil War
4. Josephus (1836-1856)
5. Armanda or Amanda (1838-1883) m. Patton Trout, buried at Allen Co. Kansas.
6. Elizabeth (1839-1898) m.William Turner, buried at Old Union Chapel, Warren Co. KY.
7.Mary (1840-1923) m. Sidney Walker Davis, buried at Odin,IL
8. George (1843-1913 m. Martha Davis sister of Sidney, served in Civil War under Gen. John Morgan. Known as "Watt" and "Buffalo George". burried in Odin, IL.
I am at a brick wall on John and Mary Black. I found two bits of information that have a John Black in them that some believe is the same one that I am researching. There are some descrepancys though and I can't prove it is the same man.
One piece of information goes as follows:
George Black, sailed to America in the laet 1600's and had 3 sons:
1. Josiah Black
2. William Black
3. Samuel Black
Samuel moved to Albermarle Co, Virginia in about 1718 and was a preacher. He married Catherine Shaw, and they had 6 children as follows:
1. Samuel Black Jr.
2. James Black
3. Margaret Black
4. Mary Sarah Black
5. John Black ( believed to be the John Black I'm researching)
6. William Black
The other piece of information goes as follows:
Alexander Black had 3 sons and he died about 1764. That's all it says about him. The sons names are:
1. William Black
2. Alexander Black
3. Samuel Black born about 1727
This says this Samuel Black had 9 chidren and says nothing about his wife. These are the names of the children:
1. John Black
2. William Black
3. Samuel Black
4. James Black
5. Margaret Black m. ? Bodkin 1786
6. Mary Black born about 1746 m. Alexander Ramsay 1776.
7. Martha Black
8. Nancy Black
9. Jean Black
The Alexander Black in this place might have been named George Alexander Black and the son of his may have been named Alexander Josiah Black or vise-versa. And there is still the 3 extra children.
If there is anyone who has any information at all on this line of Black's I'd really appreciate it if you would share it with me. I am very interested in finding out about this John Black and getting past the wall I'm blocked at. Please fel free to e-mail me directly at "" Thank you.

Sincerely,
Andy Russell Black
