I'm intrigued by such early Black family members, Carl.
I can't connect with your Joseph or Susannah in my data base, but know
that the Blacks were fond of using the same names over and over.
With your message, I'm going to start building a file on such early
settlers. Who knows, we may be able to connect some of our Colonial Blacks
as more and more "cousins" come on line. Perhaps others on the BLACK-L will
share data on their earliest Blacks. From such a base of information, great
discoveries may come. Clearly, there were a number of Blacks in the
Colonies in the18th century.
Does anyone have any verified Black ancestors from the 17th century?
For me, the earliest known Black ancestor is WILLIAM BLACK, b bef. 1725,
d abt Dec 1789 Halifax Co., Va. m first to UNKNOWN LONGDON d abt 1756.
Their children were THOMAS BLACK b abt 1752 Halifax Co., Va. d June 20, 1814
Pittsylvania Co., VA m SUSANNAH RICHARDSON b abt 1757 Halifax Co., Va. d Dec
17, 1837 Pittsylvania Co., Va.; FREDERICK BLACK m Jan 11, 1790 Mecklenburg
Co., Va. ELIZABETH LOCKETT; JOHN BLACK d abt 1814 Campbell Co., Va. m
Campbell Co., Va. Michal; and youngest daughter MOLLY BLACK. WILLIAM BLACK
m second ANNE HAWKINS.
From THOMAS BLACK (1752), my ancestor, second son, SKIP RICHARDSON BLACK
b 1780 Pittsylvania Co., VA d December 25, 1840 Putnam Co., GA m first abt
1800 GA MARY BROWN b abt 1780 d abt 1814 Baldwin, GA m second RUTHA
STEPHENS; Other children of THOMAS BLACK and SUSANNAH RICHARDSON are
ELIZABETH BLACK b 1772 Halifax Co., Va, m Jan 14, 1800 WILLIAM MITCHELL;
THOMAS BLACK, JR. b abt 1778 Pittsylvania Co., Va. d 1861 Panola Co., Tx. m
Oct 15, 1804 ELIZABETH DEWS; SARAH BLACK, aka SALLY b 1782 Pittsylvania
Co., VA d Davidson Co., TN m Oct 13, 1804 Campbell Co., VA REUBEN G. DEWS;
ABSALOM BLACK b 1788 Pittsylvania Co., Va. d Nov 28, 1841 Tallapoosa Co.,
Al. m abt 1811 Ga MARY G. and finally NATHANIEL SPRAGGINS BLACK, b April 23,
1789 Pittsylvania Co., VA d Feb 14, 1871 Near Loachapoka, Tallapoosa Co., AL
m first May 01, 1809 Halifax Co., VA ELIZABETH ANN WILKS and m second 1855
Tallapoosa Co., Al. SARAH ANN WILLIAMS.
For the earliest information, I have depended on more experienced Black
family researchers and very generous cousins. For generations
closer to me, I have some early documents. My lineage is Wm. Black (bef.
1725 VA) to Thomas Black (abt. 1752 VA) to Skip Richardson Black (1780 VA)
to John Thomas Black, aka Thomas (March 03, 1803 VA) to James Richardson
Black (1824 GA) to Lucinda Pamelia Elizabeth Black (1854 GA) to Olin Black
McDaniel (1882 GA) to Willis Olin McDaniel (1912 GA) to me (1937 NC).
