Message Board Post:

Thanks, Patsy.

My line descends from Thomas Black/Margaret nee Peery Ashmore Black through Wyley Black + Frances A. Cassaday, so it includes the Micajah Goodman line as well.

I want to know if anyone has ever found evidence that the putative descent of Thomas Black from Josiah Black and Rebecca Oglethorpe might be founded in facts.

Through Jim Calvin's correspondence, I found the Culpepper site, with the deed that shows Blacks/Oglethorpe together.

I believe that you may have an explanation of how the Middleton line intermarries through the generations with the Blacks and Oglethorpes. I certainly am interested in that as well.

I also wonder if anyone has straightened out which of the early Blacks in the Clark Co. and Vigo Co. areas are brothers. "My" Thomas Black, for instance, is not the same person as the Thomas Black in Vigo Co. who marries Lavina Dudley and has several land transactions over the years. I do have the Clark Co. history that relates that "Mr. Black" and sons (Joseph, Thomas, William, John) were the first to settle in Wabash Twp. of Clark Co.

Zabette checked in with me after my query was posted, to say that you are cousins. I know she is interested in the Goodman line and in the Elam line from her postings on the web. I have no connection to the Elam line. I have done some research on the Goodman line. Are you of the opinion that Micajah descends from Bartlett Goodman?

I hope to hear from you. If you are kind enough to reply, I will go back to my own research, if you have specific questions for me. In brief, I am interested especially in the Black line, but I also have researched Peery, Cassaday, and Goodman lines. Because of intermarriages, I have some information on the Ashmores, but I do not feel that I have a clear picture of their line.

I have done census work, some cemetery work, and some research in the courthouse in Clark Co. and in Vigo Co. I have also used the local history section of the Vigo Co. Public Library. In Chicago, I use the Newberry library.

I hope that this information is helpful to you.
Best wishes,
C. Scott
