Hi Michelle

The Belsey's I have all come from Tilmanstone, Littlebourne and Canterbury, and no-one on my tree comes from Ramsgate. One of my contacts, who has also been researching Belsey, does have some Belseys from Ramsgate, but no William born 1857 nor James, his father.

I checked on my 1881 Census CD's, but William does not appear - as you say he was a sailor he was probably at sea. I do have a James Belsey on the Census and wonder if he is yours. He was born about 1829 (age 52 on the census) and was born in Wickman, Kent. His census address was Faversham, Kent. He was a widower with two children still at home, a son (Charles age 15) and a daugher (Emma age 11) - both children born in Chilham, Kent. He was a Farm Labourer.

Hope the above is of some help.

Sue
