Message Board Post:
James C. BLACK, born prob. bef. 1802, died btn. Mar. and Nov. of 1839, probably in Adams Co., IL, or the surrounding area. His wife was Katharine, and they had children--don't know any names, or how many they had.
This may be the same James BLACK that married in Maury Co., TN in 1823:
BLACK, James to FITZPATRICK, Catharine, 23 Sep 1823, Maury Co., TN, bondsman James BEATY. Another marriage source (bonds), has Katherine's name as Catharine FITZGERALD.

**note**My guess is that she was a Fitzpatrick, as that particular surname is more prevelant in the area of Maury Co. that these guys migrated from--but I am not at all sure!!! Just a guess...
This James C. Black was a "cousin" to Amzi BLACK (1799-prob. 1864), who left Maury Co., TN in 1836, and settled in Adams Co., IL. Amzi and his wife, Amy A. (Moore) BLACK, wrote many letters home to family in TN. Many of these letters refer to this James C. BLACK and wife Katharine.
The reference to his death above is taken from a letter dated 7 Nov 1839, in which Amzi writes "...I was greatly shocked to hear that cousin James C. Black was dead, when I met cousin Wm. Campbell on the other side of Jacksonville. But true[ly] it is he is gone the way of all the earth, and at this time I have upon me the care of his business, as Admistrator. when I heard of Cousin James death I wrote to J. Baldridge to bring the $48.25 down immediately for cousin Katharine he wrote to me that he had it not then in hand but would have it in a few days, and that I should not be disappointed."
Amzi Black struggles with the note repayment from Mr. Baldridge for the next few months, and seems to have cleared the debt by Feb. 1840.
By May of 1840, Katharine BLACK is still living near Amzi & Amy A. Black. He writes home that she is still living in the house, but doesn't know what she will do or where she will go. However, based on a letter written in May 1849, she appears to still be living near Amzi & Amy, as Amzi writes "...Katharine and family are well..."
Is anyone looking for this guy?? Or does anyone know anything more about him? I am in the middle of transcribing these old letters, and any information at all would be a great help!
Thanks in advance...
