>From bits of Mitchell family records and Internet postings of Scots data, I have a line of Mitchell back to Elizabeth Black and Alexander Mitchell who were married on February 22, 1840, in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. (Mitchell family history--which might be faulty--identifies Elizabeth as Mary.)

Alexander and Elizabeth had James (b. April 1841 and buried in Appanoose County, Iowa, in 1917), Francis (March 28, 1843), Alexander (June 11,1845 my greatgrandfather, also buried in Appanoose), John Mitchell (b. April 25, 1847), and Andrew (b.February 13, 1851). So far as I can tell, all the children were born in Old Monkland in Lanarkshire. There might have been other children.

My greatgrandfather Alexander (b. 1845) married Margaret Sarah Foryst Prentice Gilfilan MacPhee (b. 1852) in Old Monkland in 1872. They came to America in the early 1880s and settled in Lucas, Iowa, later moving to Centerville.

Are there any Blacks who can tie into my Mitchells and suggest a line of ancestry from Elizabeth? Can some Black give me some more information about Elizabeth's children?

Sincerely,
John Mitchell
