Hello Richard! I've been looking for a different Ephraim Black than your Ephraim Black. My Ephraim was born in County Tyrone, Ireland a little after your Ephraim. However, in the process I may have stumbled across some information about your Ephraim and his family. I found the following information on this Web site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joanlund/black/illinoismisc.html

89. Ephraim Black 25 b NC (hse hld 64/64)(1850 Calhoun Co., IL census)
Emily 19 b IL
Evelina Smith 43 KY
John R. Smith 12 IL
Melissa J. Smith IL
Laura Smith 8/12 IL
John Black 48 b Ireland

As you will note, acccording to the Illinois census for 1850, there was an Ephraim Black living there who would have been exactly the right age to be your ancestor. He was 25 in 1850 and he was born in North Carolina. If you go to the original source (the Illinois census, not the Web page I mentioned), you may be able to determine if John Black is the father of Ephraim Black. This could possibly help to add another generation to the Black ancestry in your family. My Black ancestors were all still living in Ireland at that time period as far as I know. If John is your ancestor, then you will need to begin searching Irish records for more information, a somewhat daunting experience at times. Best wishes!

Elizabeth
