Subject: [BLACK-L] Andrew Jackson Black--immaculate conception???
Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 10:23:49 -0700
Searching for ancestry of A. J. Black and Mahaley/Mahala
Blair/Whiteside. Anyone who recognizes any of these people, please contact
me.
With all the Black surnamed families on this list with ancestors
from TN and AL in the 17-1800s, and all the messages, none have my AJ Black.
I can only conclude he was found in a cabbage patch somewhere in TN and
raised by an un-named family--please, please doesn't someone out there have
this guy in their database?
Sarah Percy Black was born in Alabama December 20, 1847. Her
parents, Andrew J. (Jackson?) Black, born in Tennessee about 1827, and
Mahala Whiteside or Blair, who was also born in Tennessee about 1824, are
still unclear to me. Their marriage was probably in 1847. The LDS IGI has
some entries for Mahala/Mahaley with Whiteside for a maiden name. The only
recorded marriage of an Andrew Black and Mahala in Alabama in 1847 I've
found so far is with a Mahaley Blair, in Benton County. 'Course, it is
possible they may were married in Tennessee and then moved to Alabama where
Sarah was born, so I still do not know Mahaley's maiden name for sure.
Census records list Mahaley's husband as A. J. Black, and Andrew Black, and
I feel his middle name was probably Jackson. Andrew Jackson was a popular
name, and the middle name of Jackson was also given to one of Sarah's
children, and their first might be a clue: (George Alexander Whitfield
Spencer).
Shortly after Sarah's birth, the Andrew Black family moved to
Arkansas. They appear in the 1850 census for Big Rock township, Pulaski
County, AR., and Andrew is described as a Teacher. In 1860 they are in Clark
County, and then in 1870 were in Hot Springs, AR where A. J. was listed as a
Preacher and they reported an additional daughter Alice BLACK, born about
1867 in Arkansas.
Sarah Percy Black married Charles Edward Spencer and then they moved
to Wise County, TX to raise their family.
Won't someone out there help me prove that AJ was not from an
immaculate conception?????
