SURNAMES: BLACK, KENT, WEST, COCHRANE,
PARTRIDGE
I am seeking information on the ancestry of my father, Frederic
West BLACK, who was born 7 December 1903 in West
Ham, registry Plaistow (now London). He had several older
sisters, Dorothy, Winnifred, and May, also believed to
have been born in West Ham.
They were among the children of George Robert BLACK,
b. 30 Aug. 1862, Southwark, Surrey, UK, and Flora WEST,
b. 21 Jun 1869, Bermondsey, Surrey. The family emigrated,
presumably from West Ham, London, early in 1904, to
Toronto, Ont., Canada (where two or three more children
were born). GRB died late 1935 or early 1936 in Toronto.
George Robert's father is also thought to have been named
George and his mother Mary Sara KENT. Parents of my
grandmother (Flora WEST) were William Frederic WEST,
possibly of Southwark, and Hannah COCHRANE,
probably b. 12 May 1851, in Bermondsey, Surrey. (After
the death of W.F. WEST she married George
PARTRIDGE.)
If any of this connects with your line of inquiries I'd be
happy to hear from you and give any assistance I can.
Ed Black, Waterloo, Ont., Canada.
