The Black surname does not have a single country of origin, being a common name in several countries. Schwartz, for instance, was a common German surname which was translated as Black when Germans settled in colonial America. And in France, the Black surname appears as Lenoir. However, most Blacks trace their origins to the British Isles where Black is common as a surname in Scotland, Ireland, and England.
