I believe I've already compared notes with some of you here, but for
those of you who don't know me (or those who haven't talked to me in a
while), I'm researching the descendants and ancestors of Samuel Black
and Hester Connell. So far I've (roughly) gathered the following:
John Black immigrated from Ireland most likely in either 1758 or 1770.
He came with his wife, who's name I don't know, his son Samuel (who was
either 6 weeks or 6 years old at the time according to family rumor) and
his daughter Janet. John may have fought in the Revolutionary War. He
may have lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Washington County,
Maryland; and/or Berkeley County, West Virginia or Virginia before he
eventually moved to Fayette County, PA. In Fayette it appears he lived
in Bullskin - close to present day Connellsville. In addition to his
children Samuel and Janet, I believe he also had two more sons, William
and John. I'm not sure if they were born in America or Ireland. I
believe both Samuel and John (jr.) were involved in the Revolutionary
War as well. I believe they served as boatmen. A William Black related
to this family (may or may not have been John Sr's son) did fight in the
War of 1812 and is buried in the Stone Chapel cemetery in Adams County,
Ohio.
In Bullskin, there was close association between John Black's family and
the family of Zachariah Connell who later founded Connellsville, PA.
Zachariah's daughter, Hester, married Samuel Black.
Dates:
Samuel Black (born 16 Oct 1764 in Ireland)
Hester Connell (27 Mar 1769 on farm in Winchester, Frederick County ,
Virginia)
Samuel Black married Hester Connell 13 Nov 1788 in Fayette County, PA.
John Black later signed on with Nathaniel Massie to settle and survey
the area surrounding present day Manchester, Adams County, Ohio, and
founded Manchester along with Massie and several other volunteers. John
may have been in the Manchester area as early as 1790. I do not know
what other family members may have gone with him at this time. Later he
was joined by Samuel and Hester (about 1793-1795) and several of
Hester's brothers and sisters and their families including John Rice
Connell, William Page, Mr. Hollingsworth, Greenbury Rigley Jones, and
possibly others. I believe most if not all of the Connells and Blacks
(and the families they married into) were Methodist, several were
preachers as well including Greenbury and William Page. Also, the land
for Stone Chapel in Adams County was donated by one of the Blacks, but
I'm not sure which one - I suspect either John Sr. or Samuel Black. The
children of Samuel and Hester as I know them are:
Zachariah Black
Samuel Black
William Black
Elizabeth Black
John Black
Rebecca Black
Janet Connell Black
Hester Black
I am most familiar with the children of Zachariah Black from this group,
though I do know some the others as well. I have no idea what became of
Samuel Black's sister Janet (daughter of John Black) or what happened to
Samuel's other brothers and sisters. I also do not know who John (Sr.)
Black's parents were or the name of his wife. I don't know where in
Ireland he is from either. On the Connell side I have better info
covering Zachariah's family and a little bit about his other children.
Though I have some info on Zachariah's ancesters, I have very little in
the way of good "documentation" concerning them and would appreciate any
sources someone could point me to. I also have very little info on
Zachariah Connell's wives - Rebecca Rice and Margaret Wallace. I am
interested in talking and comparing notes with ANYONE who is related to
or doing research on these Blacks and Connells and their
ancestors/descendants.
