I am searching for the upline relations of John Elnathan Black who immigrated to the US in about 1820 with his brother (for whom I have no name). His brother went to California where he was killed in a gunfight.

John Elnathan Black (Schwartz) settled in the York District of South Carolina and married Emily Easton, date unknown. To become more Americanized John Elnathan Black changed his name from Schwartz to Black. On June 19, 1820 my GG Grandfather John Ellis Black was born. A short time later a daughter, Mary Black, was born date unknown.

Years Later John Ellis Black had moved to Mississippi, Chactaw County, fought in the Civil War and was killed in a battle against General Sherman when he swept through Mississippi, d. 9-29-1864. I know quite a few details from John Ellis Black on down the line but very little about my GGG Grandfather John Elnathan Black who immigrated from an area between France and Germany, referred to as Alsace - Lorraine, where he was a coal miner.

I have found some genealogy that is close, similar names and offspring, etc. but still no cigar.

I would be very grateful if anyone could supply some hints as to where I could look for these kind of details. Also, if anyone is interested in the downline information of the John Elnathan Black family tree, I would be happy to supply it to you.
