Subject: [BLACK-L] Joseph W. BLACK--adopted

Hello all....

I'm still working on my three year search for information in regard to Joseph
W. BLACK b. abt. 1797 in PA? The reason for the question mark is because
other data list other states. However, I tend to believe he was born in PA.

I have not been able to get past him, and he is only my great-grandfather.
Family story has it that he was adopted and given the BLACK surname. In
addition, the BLACK surname was originally SWARTZ.

He was in NY in 1830. I do not know for how long only that his son, Joseph
Whitney BLACK was born there in March of that year. My great-grandfather was
married to a Nancy GARDENER at that time. I do not know what happened to
her. Did she die or were they divorced?

He turned up in Michigan by at least 1835 in the St. Joseph County area of
Michigan. I know that he must have been around the surrounding vicinity,
since several of his children were born in Vicksburg (Kalamazoo County) and
Schoolcraft. Evidence also points them to the Grand Rapids area.

Joseph W. BLACK also married Sarah E. DICKERSON and had the following
children:

Stephen M.
Matilda B.
Alice--Alice and Anna died earlier on in childhood.
David H.
Anna

Joseph W. BLACK died between 1870-1880. His son Joseph Whitney went by his
middle name and often shortened it to Whit.

Does anyone have any adopted Joseph's in their BLACK line?

Thanks!

Colleen
