Surname: Vestal, Kelso, Smith, Talkington, Beebe, Amisly
-------------------------

Am looking for any information on the John Black Family of Indiana. I was
told that my gggrandfather John Black was from Edinburg,Scotland, (but
it could be Ireland), and he and 3 other brothers stowed away on a cattle
boat, were discovered at sea, made to work for their passage to America,
and once they arrived, each went their seperate wasy.
I know that he lived in Indiana, and was also told that his wife was half
native American. They had several children, and the list that I was given
was Minerva b. abt. 1839, (they called her Fannie) and she was suppose
to have married a Kelso and lived in Indianapolis, lived to be 100 years
old), Martha, b. abt. 1841, Rachel, b. abt. 1845, Henry Clay, b.abt. 1848,
David Harrison, b. June 17, 1848-1850, was my ggrandfather, married Margaret
(Maggie) Talkington in 1877 in Decatur, Indiana, was a horse trainer and
trader, moved to Missouri in 1899, and was suppose to have been in the
Civil war, some say Calevery others say he was a young boy and was a drummer
boy, but he died in "Old Soldiers Home in or near Terra Haute, Indiana
in 1931), Caroline, abt. 1853, Hiram b. abt. 1856, (had 2 known children,
Fred and Lizza), Nancy, abt. 1858,(married a Smith and live in Broadripple,
Indiana) and Jane, abt. 1869, (suppose to have married a Bary Beebe.
I found a marriage application in Jefferson County, Indiana in 1838, for
a John Black to Susan Deal, and Susan Vestal had married a John Deal in
Jeffeston County, Indiana in 1835. (Perhaps John Deal had passed away).
I have not been able to find any other information on this family, except
for my ggrandfather, in after he moved to Missouri. David was suppose to
be a very devout Catholic, a drinker, a gambler, and would fight at the
drop of a hat, then help the other man off the field and buy him a drink.I
know the children of David Harrison and Margaret Talkington were my grandfather,
Robert Franklin Black (Frank) born in 1877, Bartholomew Co., Indiana, and
other children were Henry Edmund, Sue, Minnie, David Eugene, Rusha, Hiram
Elsworth, Benjamin, Samuel Scott, and James Drew. The latter 2 boys died
at an early age, but all the other children moved to Missouri with their
parents.
Robert Franklin, (Frank) was also a great horseman, and he helped clear
the timber in Southeast Missouri and Arkansas, but settled in Butler County,
Missouri. He had married a Sidney Amisly (not sure of last name spelling)
and they had one daughter Margaret (Dolly). We are not sure if he married
Sidney in Indiana, Illinois or Missouri. Cannot find any records. He later
married Edith Wilson Sparkman of Butler County, and we have the rest of
the information from there.
WE CANNOT FIND ANY INFORMATION ON JOHN BLACK, NOR CAN WE FIND ANYTHING
PRIOR TO MISSOURI EXCEPT MARRIAGE DATA of John in Jefferson Co., and David
in Decatur Co., Indiana.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME? I and 3 other cousins have searched this for
years, and perhaps we are looking in the wrong places, but we just can't
find anything.
Thank you so much in advance.
Sharon Black
