Surname: Black, Follett
-------------------------

Teresa- Much research has failed to produce Robert's father. One family
tree I have stumbled across states that his parents were John Follett and
Dorothye Sandor. I'm not sure this has been proved. Most of the data I
have come across has Robert being born in Devon, England. There are many
spellings for the Follett name: Foliot, Folliot, Folliott, Follet, etc.
There was a Thomas Foliot(Mariner) who was associated with Sir Ferdinando
Gorges ( he was granted land in America in the early 1600s). The earliest
Folletts I have come across are John and William who were in New Hampshire.
John was there as early as 1640. He signed the Dover Combination. William
may have been here as early as the 1650s. Possibly the two are related
and I think are related to Robert, somehow. I think all of them were connected
to ships and shipping. There is a Robert Follett who was a ship owner in
Exeter, Devon in the 1620s. This could be a connection to our Robert. A
John Follett was a mariner in Kingsweare, Devon, England about the same
time. There is a Robert Follett with a will dated 1628 in Devon. He was
living in East Budleigh, Devon which is the same place that Roger Conant
of Salem, Massachusetts fame is from. Seems a little coincidental, huh?
Unfortunatly, alot of records in Exeter were destroyed during the bombing
of WWII. The Follett name is of very old vintage in England. It is thought
that the original ones came to Enland with William the Conqueror in 1066.
They were granted land for helping him. The early family line includes
Knights, Sirs and Barons. I have even stumbled across a book that has the
theory that a Foliot was the knight that is mentioned in the Robin Hood
legend. I can e-mail you more information if you are interested.
