Hello all...

I have been stuck on my great-grandfather, Joseph W. BLACK b. abt. 1797 in
PA, d. 1870-1880 in Michigan. He was married to Nancy GARDNER then Sarah E.
DICKERSON.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate exactly where or when he died
and suspect their might not be any death certificate filed on him. Also, the
cemetery in which I am sure that he is buried (since it is a family plot and
all the rest are buried there) has no records due to fire. To add to the
problem, there is no marker. Although, oddly enough.....all the females that
are buried in this plot have markers. However, the other male doesn't have
one either.

Anyhow, I am wondering how adoptions were handled back then, and what the
chances are that any records would be available? Since I have no idea what
the prior surname would have been.....I don't even think this is something I
could pursue.

Anyone input would be greatly appreciated.

Colleen
