Family rumor has it, that our family line of Blacks are also Cherokee.
My Gr GR Grandfather, General George Washington Black aka George Washington
Black, b. 1830 in Maury Co. Tn. Beyond his Illinois Civil War record, I
haven't found confirmation for anything on him. I have checked the Dawes
roles (one of the official Cherokee roles), but the problem is that if
a family could pass for white, they did. It saved them a very long walk.
In any case, if you are successful in establishing that lineage, you might
be eligable for being included on the current tribal roles yourself. Don't
know if that helps any.
