Apologize if I've already sent this query to the list, but I don't think I
have:

NYC Blacks:

Does anyone any NY Blacks, who supposedly changed the name to Black from
Brown in the mid to late 1800's? (No, I'm not kidding.....mine must have
been stuck on any name that could be coordinated with what they were
wearing.)

My grandmother told me years ago, that supposedly, her grandfather, Wm. E.
Black, or someone before him, changed the surname from Brown. She didn't
have any explanation for this, but I have one possible idea as to why. She
also said that he had supposedly paid someone to go and fight the Civil War
for him, which I guess wasn't all that terribly unusual back then. I'm
wondering if he would have sent the soldier, with his real name, i.e. Brown,
and assumed the Black for himself, so that nobody would be the wiser.
Although I've heard that sending someone else to war for you happened, I
don't know if it was legal, and perhaps this is what spurred a name change.

--Excactly what I was going to say. I think it's good to include AREA LIVED
whenever possible; many of us do not know all the first names of a surname,
and sometimes we can only go by place they lived for clues. And I think
this applies especially to a VERY common name like BLACK!

Searching surnames BLACK, MCCOY, SHAWGO, LANCASTER, HARE, HOSTETLER, HODGSON
