I'm on the Black Rootsweb line and read your query. I have the 1881 census for Scotland and looked for your family. There was no John Black born in 1853. Are you sure of his name? I looked for Helen Laing from Errol and came up dry. Then I looked for a Helen Black from Errol, Perth born in 1856 and this is what I found ----

Census place:Kilmany,Fife, Scotland

David Black Head Married 28 Male born Leuchars, Fife
Helen Black wife " 25 Fem " Errol, Perth

Helen Black dau " 2 Fem " Dairsie, Fife
Ann Black dau " 8mo.Fem " Forgan, Fife
