Hi Folks,
Still looking for information on Elias John Black.
His siblings according to his pension files were:
Matilda Black
Lile Black that married a Swartz
William Black that married Mattie.


1. ELIAS JOHN1 BLACK was born November 1837 in Harrison, Wells County,
Indiana, and died November 10, 1902 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He married
NANCY JANE LONG November 07, 1867 in Georgetown, Vermillion County,
Illinois, daughter of LEVI LONG and CELIA JONES. She was born March 1846 in
Ohio, and died March 29, 1933 in Grant City, Worth County, Missouri.



Notes for ELIAS JOHN BLACK:

Also known as Eli and Elijah.



Elias J Black Residence Dallas, Harrison County, Missouri

Enlisted on 6/6/61 as a private.

On 8/4/61 he mustered into "D" Co. IL 25th Infantry

He mustered out on 9/5/64 at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois.



>From his pension application affidavit he states the following:

That for five years prior to his enlistment he resided in Wells Co. Ind PO
Buffington

and to June 3 1859 and Vermillion Co. IL until he mustered in the service.

Since discharged he resided in Vermillion Co. IL until Dec. 1864,

then Wells Co. IN until July 1865, then Vermillion Co. IL until Apr 1872,

then to Edgar Co. IL until Jan 1876, then in Worth Co. MO.



Description as follows: 5 feet 10 inches, complexion dark, hair Black,

eyes dark.

Married on Nov 7 1867 by James Whitlock, a minister of the Cumberland
Presbyterian

church near Georgetown, Vermillion County, IL. The church was called Mt.
Pisgah

about two miles from Georgetown.

1901 E J Black and Nancy J Black petitioned the Worth County Court for
custody of thier

grandson Arthur Byran Hopkins. Custody was granted.



Black, E.J. died 10 Nov 1902, a former well known citizen of Oxford, Worth
Co.,MO. & was killed at

Leavenworth KS. He had a restaurant there. He was a settler and resident
of Oxford, where he

ran the blacksmith shop for years and also the Justice of the Peace. He
built the Hotel and

blacksmith shop in Worth, MO. when it was established. He sold the business
about 1900 and

moved to St. Joeseph, MO and then on to Leavonworth, MO.



On Nov 10 1902 he was attacked and slugged in the head. Left to bleed to
death. On Nov 11 1902

a small child found him between the alleys of Dakota, Pawnee, Main and
Second Streets. He was

sent to Cushing Hospital and died there about 3:00 pm on the 11th.

Mr. Black was well known for carrying large amounts of cash on him; other
than that police had

no other motive.
