Minnie Stowe Puett's History Gaston Co, NC is not a reliable source for
Black family history. I own a copy of this book which my aunt purchased
from Mrs. Puett's sister, whom she knew. Apparently she just lumped all the
Blacks together and assumed a lot. I have all the deeds for the Black
family from Lincoln Co records. I do not have the Tryon Co grants, etc. for
Black. You should look at Brent Holcomb's book on this subject. A David
Black did get married in Lincoln Co, but he was from across the Catawba
River in Iredell County. He is the only David mentioned in Lincoln Co
records that I can find. He was TOO young to be the father of Thomas Black.
It was in 1779 that Tryon County was abolished and Lincoln and Rutherford
Counties were created from its territory. Tryon was created in 1768 from
Mecklenburg County - so you may need to search land records in Mecklenburg
Co, also. Brent Holcomb published several volumes of land records covering
Mecklenburg, Tryon and the adjoining part of South Carolina.
After years of study, I believe the William Black that Mrs. Puett referred
to was my William Black of eastern Lincoln Co. As I said, she appeared to
be "assuming" they were all related. But, my William Black did not come to
Lincoln Co until the 1780's. He came from Virginia with the Nixons and
Kincaids. These families were already intermarried when they arrived in
Lincoln, and continued to do so in Lincoln County. I know that some of the
Blacks are Scots-Irish, and no doubt our William Black was. His land
adjoined old Unity Presbyterian Church and he is probably buried there.
Some of his children and heirs are buried there with tombstones.
It is possible that your Thomas Black might connect with some of the Black
families in Mecklenburg County. The name Thomas is found in some of those
families.
Hope this information is helpful.
