Elizabeth BLACK, with her son Ephraim BLACK, moved back to the land on
Indian Creek sometime before the death of Thomas BLACK in 1779. Elizabeth
lived and died in this community along Indian Creek.
Ephraim BLACK received a marriage bond on 21 December 1790 to wed Tabitha
HOMESLEY. Ephraim and Tabitha lived and died on the farm on Indian Creek.
Ephraim BLACK and Tabitha HOMESLEY were buried in the family cemetery, which
has been destroyed. Some years ago their tombstones were still legible:
" IN MEMORY OF EPHRAIM BLACK SEN., WHO WAS BORN FEB 11th A.D. 1776 AND DIED
SEPT. 24th 1843. AGED 76 YEARS, 8 MONTHS, AND 13 DAYS."
"TABITHA BLACK BORN JUNE 4, 1778: DIED JULY 6, 1854. AGED 76 YEARS
(Broken)"
Shortly before his death Ephraim BLACK prepared his will. It is given below
in
abstracted form.
"EPHRAIM BLACK, of the County of Lincoln, State of North Carolina, being
sick.....Unto my beloved wife TABITHA my dwelling house and Kitchen and all
the furniture and one Negro Girl Renan..... To my son LORENZO, I give and
bequeath to him my plantation that I now live on being the East side of my
Spring Branch, commencing at Carpenter's Still House and running with the
branch to my Still House.... My son ALFRED....my son BENAGE, Fifty-four
acres.....My two sons ALFRED BLACK AND LORENZO BLACK an entry of land,
joining James McClure and others containing 40 acres.....My property to be
sold and divided among my children, VIZ, STEPHEN, EPHRAIM, LAWSON, SAMUEL,
WILEY, ABEL, ELIZABETH..... My daughter ELIZABETH BLACK.....My sons LORENZO
AND ALFRED BLACK are to be the Executors. Made September 18, 1843."

sources a record of his children can be learned.

Barbara LEONHARDT b. 16 Apr 1798 d. 30 Dec 1822. m.
2nd wife: Married on 23 Sept. 1825 to
Barbara Rebecca STROUP b. 16 Aug 1805 d. 14 July 1868.
2) BLACK, Jemima b. (probable the first child) d. unknown m. 2 Mar 1812 to
Michael MAUNEY b. 1788 d. 1866 or before 1885-6,
son of Valentine MAUNEY and Catherine KISER.
3) BLACK, Stephen b. 3 Feb 1800 d. 22 June 1856 m. 1821 to
Elizabeth BROWN b. 1799 d. 9 Aug 1882.
Stephen and Elizabeth lived at Cherryville and the lane of Cherry trees on
their farm was the source of the town's name.

6) BLACK, Samuel Simpson b. 18 Apr 1807 d. 31 Oct 1882
m. 16 Nov 1835 to Ann CARPENTER b. 1818 d. 6 Aug 1856.

9) BLACK, Lorenzo Dow b. 8 Aug 1818 d. 20 Dec 1904
m. 12 Feb 1844 to Melinda WEAVER b. 5 Sept 1820 d. 3 Nov 1886.
10) BLACK, Alfred b. unknown d. unknown buried in the cemetery with his
parents, according to family members....the marker is destroyed.
