Hello all.....

My great-grandfather, Joseph W. BLACK b. abt 1797 lived in New York in 1830.
I've narrowed it town to two places:

Groveland, Livingston County, New York

Smithfield, Madison County, New York

Since the ages are shown on the Livingston County census, I'm leaning towards
this county as the one he lived in during this time. The only reason I even
know that he lived in New York at all is because his son, Joseph Whitney
BLACK was born there in March of 1830. Joseph Whitney went by his middle
name Whitney and was often called Whit.

Joseph W. BLACK was married to Nancy GARDNER during this time. He later
remarried in Michigan to Sarah E. DICKERSON b. 1826 in MA. I don't know what
happened to Nancy or if she ever made it to New York with Joseph. However, I
believe it is possible and that she died there.

This family ended up in Michigan around 1840-1845 going by information of the
census. The elder Joseph W. BLACK is believed to have been born in PA.
There is much conflict as to where he was actually born due to conflicts on
the census and his children's death certificates. Going by this, it would
appear he was born in 4 different places. However, I tend to believe it was
PA.

Does anyone have any BLACK's who lived in either city or county in 1830. If
so, please contact me.

Thanks,

Colleen
