Subject: [BLACK-L] George BLACK; Clark Co, IL; 1800s

Hi!
I'm looking for confirming info regarding the parents of Reuben BLACK
who was b. in 1847 in IL (or IN?). He m. Mary FOX in 1872 in NE and
had the following children:
George W. BLACK, b. 1873, Nebraska, m. Susan M. Claus
Clara BLACK, b. 1875, Nebraska, died young
Minnie BLACK, b. 1878, Nebraska, died young
Grace A. Black, b. 1880, Nebraska, m. Christopher M. Anderson
Herbert BLACK, b 1883, Nebraska, died young
R. Christopher BLACK, b. 1887, Nebraska, m. Maebelle A. Arehart
M. Josephine BLACK, b. 1891, Nebraska, m. (1) J. Leonard HAHN, (2)
Robert A. Abshire
According to Reuben and Mary's marriage record, Reuben was born in IL
to George W. BLACK and Ella CLEMENTS.
I went through the census rolls for every George BLACK and G. BLACK
found in the available indexes for Indiana and Illinois for 1850 and
1860 (and there were quite a few!) looking for one with a wife named
Ella and a child named Reuben and found only one possibility:
*1850* Clark Co, IL
George Black (36) Virginia
Ethelindo (31) Kentucky
John (8) Illinois
Samuel (5) Illinois
Reuben (2) Illinois
*1860* Clark Co, IL
George Black (42) Tenn
Dicy (28) Ind
John (19) IL
Samuel (16) IL
Reuben (11) IL
Cassander (9) IL
Isaac Newton (6) IL
Margaret Ann (5) IL
George W. (4) IL
Henry G. (1/12) IL
I'm assuming this is the same family with a second wife perhaps.
There is a marriage record in Clark Co for a George BLACK and Ethelind
CLEMENTS on May 13, 1835, which added to this census info and the
correct age for a child named Reuben leads me to believe these are the
people I'm looking for. However, I've got a few differences in info
and without some kind of birth or baptism record for Reuben stating
these are his parents for sure, I'd like a little more confirmation.
The 1880 and 1900 US census and the 1885 NE state census lists Reuben
as born in Indiana and his parents born in Pennsylvania. The 1910 US
census lists him as born in Illinois, father born in Pennsylvania, and
mother born in Illinois. Reuben's death certificate puts his birth
place as Indiana, his father's name as George W. BLACK, born in Penn.,
and his mother's name unknown. Whereas confusing IN and IL seems to
be pretty common, it's the birth place of his father always being
Penn. instead of Virginia or Tennessee that's got me questioning.
Any help, thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Irene
