Hi,

I've just found this list, and I'm hoping someone else is looking for BLACKs
in north Nottinghamshire in the 18th century.

My g-g-grandfather was Thomas BLACK, born in Haughton, south of East
Retford, and baptised in Walesby church on 28th March 1813.

He had one older sister that I know of - Mary, baptised in Walesby 7th
October 1810.

Their parents are given in the PRs as John and Mary Black. I'm fairly
certain that John Black was the son of William BLACK and Mary COOK(E), who
were married at Gringley-on-the-Hill, 12 Jan 1779. John was born in
Ordsall, 28 Sep 1782, and baptised there 6 Oct 1782.

My problem is that I have been unable to trace the marriage of John BLACK
and Mary - there's nothing in the IGI, and searches of the parish registers
in the whole area haven't turned anything up.

There is the possibility of this being a second marriage. A John BLACK
married Ann HICKTON at Ordsall in 1807, and a year later a child, John, son
of John and Ann BLACK was baptised at Walesby (6 Nov 1808). There's no
trace of any more children of this marriage in the area, but the Mary and
Thomas BLACK above appear at Walesby, children of John & Mary BLACK.

Did Anne die after John was born? (I can't find a likely burial)

Did the elder John re-marry someone called Mary?

What happened to Mary after 1813 - again, I cannot trace any more children
of this marriage, or a burial for a Mary BLACK.

I do know that the elder John was a widower by 1841 (confirmed in the 1851
census), by which time he was living with his daughter Mary (now married to
John Morritt) at Barnby Moor, where he stayed until his death in 1863.

Does anyone recognise these folk?
