During a recent research trip in Georgia I came across the following book
"The Cross of Military Service". It contains the history and records of
men of lineal Confederate descent who served honorably in the Army, Navy or
Marine Corps of the United States or its allies during the period of WW I
(6 April 1917 - 11 Nov 1918) and covers most states, north and south. It
was edited and compiled for the United Daughters of the Confederacy in
1927.
I found it available at two libraries: DeKalb County Public Library,
Decatur, Ga. (in the rare book collection) and at Washington Memorial
Library in Macon, Ga.
The following is an EXAMPLE of info on each person:

"Alcorn, Walter G. (V) Aug./ 8 1918-July 15, 1919 (Navy) Landsman,
Electrician, Radio, Newport, R. I. Granson of Walton N. Glover, Co. D, 5th
Ala. C. M. S. No. 1740, Dixie chapter, Columbus."
