Any assistance locating the ancestors of James and Calvin Black will
definitely be appreciated as I been pushing on the wall for a long time.
James Madison BLACK was born 11Jan 1870 (sister's bible)probably near
Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. His parents were Calvin and Betty
BLACK. Very little is known of his parents or siblings because he was
orphaned at age six. His obituary mentions three brothers and one sister but
does not gives names. One brother was Robert Lee BLACK who lived in Chicago.
Another according to family tradition was Cicero. The 1870 census for Rowan
County, Providence Township, NC lists a family which includes an entry for
Elizabeth BLACK age 22, James BLACK age 2, and Calvin BLACK age 37, mill
wright, deceased November (1869) of typhoid fever. Others listed in the
household were: Amanda BLACK age 28, Linza BLACK age 13, Cicero BLACK age
11, Nancy BLACK age 9 and Cornelia BLACK age 9. Calvin Black is thought to
have been a Confederate veteran of the Civil War. After his parents died,
James is thought to have lived with an uncle. He also may have lived for a
time with his older sister Mary Cornelia Black/Carroll who married John
Stephen Adderton Dec. 1883. They lived at Jackson Hill when daughter
Bertie was born in 1889. James moved to Jacksonville, Morgan County,
Illinois in 1891. He and Jane "Jennie" ATKINSON were married on 14 November
1893 at the home of her father in Jacksonville.
Thanks.
