Hello all.....
I am new to the list. I am researching the BLACK surname. My interest in
this surname stems from my grandfather, David H. BLACK who was born in Mendon,
St. Joseph County, Michigan on February 26, 1863. He died in Belleville, Van
Buren Township, Wayne County on July 12, 1931 from TB.
David H. BLACK is the son of Sarah and Joseph Black b. approx. 1794. Sarah
was 10 years younger than Joseph. This is where it gets difficult!
And.... I could really use some advice. Here is the situation:
On the 1850 census, my great-grandfather is listed as being born in MASS.
However, on the 1860 and 1870 (St. Joseph County, MI) census his place of
birth is shown as Connecticut.
Well, I thought that the arrival of my grandfather's (David H. BLACK) death
certificate would clear that up... but no... there it has Joseph as being
born in PA! Being that my grandmother supplied the information on the death
certificate... I went to the 1920 Wayne County, MI census where my grandfather
(David H. BLACK) is listed. It is listed as PA. Consequently, this has left
me with much confusion regarding where my grandfather was born.
I sent for death records for St. Joseph County, MI hoping to get my great-
grandfather's date of death....but no luck. He didn't die there. So... now
not only do I not know where he was born, I don't know where he died.
Moving along..... David H. BLACK married Effie HOSMER/HOSNER-PLAGUE b. 1870 in
Belleville, Van Buren Township, Wayne County, MI daughter of Levina and
stepdaughter of Charles PLAGUE b. 1850 in Mecklenburg Germany.
Children of David and Effie BLACK are:
Russell Lionel BLACK
Maxwell Donald BLACK m. Helen DICKS
Genevieve B. BLACK
Winnifred BLACK
Robert Frank BLACK
All whom were born in Belleville, MI
Siblings of David H. BLACK son of Joseph and Sarah BLACK:
Stephen BLACK b. Mendon, St. Joseph County, MI m. C.W. STEPHENSON lived in
Marcellus, Cass County, MI in 1931.
Annie BLACK b. Mendon, St. Joseph County, MI
Alice BLACK b. School Craft, MI d. at 8 years old from Typhoid fever
Matilda BLACK b. Medon, MI m. Simeon BRODY/BROADY in St. Joseph County MI
Whitney J. BLACK b. 1830 in New York. I believe that Whitney J. BLACKs legal
name was Joseph W. BLACK. He did not have the same mother as the above
children. If his legal name was Joseph W. BLACK then his mother is Nancy
GARDNER b. New York.
I believe that my great-grandfather may have had other children from his first
wife whom I believe to be Nancy GARDNER.
I can not get any further than Joseph BLACK at this point. I would like some
advice on how to approach my research with all of these road blocks. It helps
knowing that Whitney was b. 1830 in New York; however, I don't know where in
New York.
Does anyone have any of these BLACKs in their tree? Or any information or
advice?
Thanks....and sorry my posting is so long.
Colleen
