Subject: [BLACK-L] How I started Genealogy

Hi all,

Talk about researching history...... I have been doing genealogy
research for over 20 years now and I can't really remember why I
started. I remember a friend who had started doing genealogy and gave
me information so I could start. I have always loved history and this
seemed a good way to learn more. Then it seemed to mushroom from there.

I did genealogy professionally for 5 years here in New England and
enjoyed it very much. I have met some really nice people that are still
friends of mine today. I had to stop as it was taking time away from my
own family research.

I have met so many nice people, some new cousins and some new friends.
Some have given me so much help with out asking them and I'll never be
able to repay their kindness. I have always tried to share what I have
with others when ever I can.

I think one of the funniest things with family and genealogy is the
family member that wants a copy of all you have on the family, yet won't
go visit a library or cemetery near them to help you do more
research...... Thank God there are only few of them, and it seems they
are always living in the area you need the research done and you live
hundreds of miles away and can't get there.

Genealogy is always with me. I can't pass a cemetery or a historical
society that I have to stop and see what is going on. To me it is so
exciting to see where my family has come from and who they were. Most
were poor and left little records so when I find anything on them it is
like finding a true treasure of gold.
