Subject: [BLACK-L] My Reason for getting started in Genealogy......
Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 07:00:10 -0600

I like many others got started in Gen mainly for wanting to know about
the history and the ethnic make up of my family roots. The other big
reason for getting started was for a project for my daughters Special
Project Search. When it came time to put it together, we did not have as
much as the other childern did. She had only been able to go back 4
generations on one side, of my mothers family and unable to go back but
2 on my fathers side. In discovering this, I got angry at myself and
decided to do something about it.

Now that I have been researching for over a year now, I have discovered
that there were lots of secrets, traditions, and history of the family
that I did not know. I learned that much of the family is of Irish
descent and others are Truly Penn State Dutch. The only thing I do not
understand, is why some families are so elusive and others are so
easily found.....

I also have a strong belief, that if we don't preserve the history
today, in 50 years or so, the history could be lost forever. And without
the history, many families will never know of their ancestors. They will
sit idle thinking that their family roots started where their feet are
planted now. This future of history lies in the childern of today. That
is part of the reason why the teacher gave the project and continues to
give the project each year, to see if the childern can find out more
history and to bring families together. In my year of searching I have
found 2 cousins, and a possible 3 cousin.

In saying all of this, please don't give up continue to share and gather
and share again. It is all that we have left for some of us, as the
families begin to dewindle to just a few people, like mine has done.
