I have a difficult situation in my husband's line. His grandmother was
apparently born out of wedlock but one family member said the father's last
name was BLACK. Her name was Frances Elizabeth "Bessie" (BLACK), born
June 12, 1886 in Rutherford County, NC. Her mother's name was Minerva
LEDFORD (1850-1930) who by the 1910 Cleveland County census had married a
James M. GRANGER. Bessie was listed with them as "daughter" in the 1910
census, but there was a faint question mark beside the "D" on the census
listing - perhaps because the enumerator didn't know how to designate her
since she was not James Granger's blood daughter.

Bessie married William J. RABB and she died Nov. 22, 1971 in Shelby
(Cleveland County), NC.

If anyone can help me pinpoint the BLACK family she may have descended
from, I would greatly appreciate it!
