Hi Katie, and All
Swartz was most likely originally Schwartz. Could be German or Swiss. I have the same problem you have, don't know where the name change occurred. The ones I am looking for were originally Schwarzhaupt, then I believe they went to Schwar(t)z and on to Black. Have absolutely no proof of this yet.
Another name in my tree is Schwartzwalder (translates to Black Woods, as in the Black Forest in Germany). Their name changed to Blackwelder. Often times names are just translated to the english equivalent, if by the owner or someone else I don't know.
I am also looking for anyone who has a Mary Ann Black in their tree who married Casper Herche in Schuyler County, Illinois. They had at least one child, William James Herche b. abt 1854. Any help would be gratefully accepted!
Also have a Cyrus Black who married Elizabeth Harkey (Herche was the original immigrants name, some kept it - some didn't) May 31, 1831 in Mecklenburg County, NC. Elizabeth is the daughter of Martin Luther Harkey and Catherine Condor. Any links?

Hi Fellow Researchers,
Can anyone tell me who was the first Swartz family in America to change
their name to BLACK and I would like to know where the Swartz family
were living in this country
when they changed their name. Would there be a court record of that
changing??
SWARTZ is a German name isn't it ??
Thanks...Katie
