Alexander W. BLACK was born in Merriweather CO, GA, November 2,
1842 and is a son of Wesley Mark and Narcissa SLAYTON BLACK. His
father,(Wesley Mark BLACK) a leading farmer of the Empire State of the
South, moved to Alabama in 1844, continued farming and was elected Colonel
of the State militia. Both the colonel and wife were devout Christians but
were members of different denominations- he being a Methodist and she a
Baptist- but this fact did not mar the happiness of their home life. The
paternal Grandfather of Alexander W. was Peter BLACK, and his maternal
grandmother was Frances EVANS Slayton, of Georgia.
Alexander W. was educated at White Plains, Alabama and at the age
of seventeen enlisted in Company G. Tenth Alabama regiment, and served with
that company throughout the entire war. He took part at Sharpsburg,
Fredericksburg, second Manassas, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House,
seven days fight around Richmond, siege of Richmond, Petersburg and others.
In his first engagement a bullet passed through his hat, and at another his
knapsack was torn off by the explosion of a shell. His only brother, two
years younger, Andrew Pickens BLACK, served by his side until the battle of
the Wilderness, when the latter received five different wounds from which,
of course, he died.
Alexander came to Texas in 1865 and engaged in farming until 1884,
when he entered the hardware business at Blossom (Lamar CO) under the firm
name of Hutchinson and BLACK, and this popular firm is now doing the most
thriving business in its line that is transacted in that town.
February 18, 1868, Mr. Black married Miss T.A.Shackleford, of
Starksville, Texas, and his home is now brightened by the presence of six
children: Anna Willie, Oleander P., Travis R., Elizabeth, Eugene, and
Ernest Pellam. Mr. Black is a member of the Baptist church, while his wife
affiliates with the Methodists.

July 1900 in Benton Co. Alabama and is buried in the White Plaines School

Dec. 1855 in Benton Co. Alabama.

Peter Black ( b. 1791 and died 18 Aug. 1865) had a son out of wedlock with
Hepsa A. Champion (b. 1834 in Ga.) The son, John Wyly Champion was born
in 1863 in Calhoun Co. Alabama. In Old Records of Estates and
Administration Benton (Calhoun) Co. Alabama, Vol. II, "court petition filed
10 June 1866 for Bastardy Case proved child is illegitimate son of Peter
Black." After Peter Black's death in 1865, the heirs of the estate honored
the court settlement and paid Hepsa Champion the balance of the amount
stated by the court.
Other records show that John Wyly Champion b. in 1864 in Alabama married

Walker who was born 10 Oct. 1897 in Alabama.
