I am trying to determine the parents of Calvin and Betty BLACK and other
information on the family. Any help or ideas appreciated.

James Madison BLACK was born 11 January 1870 probably near Salisbury, Rowan
County, North Carolina. His parents were Calvin and Betty BLACK. Very
little is known of his parents or siblings because he was orphaned at age
six. His obituary mentions three brothers and one sister but does not gives
names. One brother was Robert Lee BLACK who lived in Chicago. The 1870
census for Rowan County, Providence Township, NC lists a family which
includes an entry for Elizabeth BLACK age 22, James BLACK age 2, and Calvin
BLACK age 37, mill wright, deceased November (1869) of typhoid fever.
Others listed in the household were: Amanda BLACK age 28, Linza BLACK age
13, Cicero BLACK age 11, Nancy BLACK age 9 and Cornelia BLACK age 9. His
father is thought to have been a Confederate veteran of the Civil War. His
birth is entered in the family bible of his sister Mary Cornelia ADDERTON.
After his parents died, James is thought to have lived with an uncle. The
uncle promised him an education but instead worked him very hard. Because of
this treatment, he left at an early age and began to support himself. He
worked in the mines near Birmingham, Alabama. Later he attended business
college and excelled in penmanship. He also learned carpentry. He moved to
Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois in 1891. James Madison BLACK and Jane
"Jennie" ATKINSON were married at 8 o'clock in the evening on 14 November
1893 at the home of her father William ATKINSON in Jacksonville. They moved
in 1907 to a farm across the White River from Cotter, AR with 3 children,
Ruth, Mabel and Harold. In 1912, they moved to Coffey County, KS. A fourth
child Chelsa was born in KS shortly after they arrived.
