Subject: BLACK FAMILY

Hi! This is a follow up to your query seeking information about Malcomb =
Black born in Moore or Lee County, NC. My information may not help you, =
but Moore, Lee, Harnett, and Cumberland County are such a common area =
that we may find a "fit" to some of our searching.
=20
I have considerable information about the descendants of William Black =
and Catherine Ray who were married in NC after coming from Scotland on =
the same ship in 1752. They settled in northern Cumberland County (now =
Harnett) near Clark's Bridge in Anderson Creek township.
=20
My great grandfather Duncan Black born in Harnett County on May 29, 1844 =
to Malcolm Black (twin -born 1815 in the Anderson Creek township of =
Harnett County) and Elizabeth Ray. I have the names of 3 other children =
of Malcolm and Elizabeth Ray Black) Daniel Black (born 1842) , Mary =
Margaret Black , and Catherine C.Ann Black.=20
=20
Malcolm Black's twin brother, Hugh married Ann Ray. They had sons: (1) =
Malcolm (born abt. 1840) who married Elizabeth Ray and they had several =
children including a son, Malcolm Ray Black. (2) David born 1844, m. =
Flora Margaret Ray, and had sons Hugh Black and Neil Black and 2 =
daughters, and (3) John born aft. 1840 - no info.
=20
Malcolm and Hugh Black's parent were Duncan Black - born 1762 in Harnett =
County and Catherine McDougald. I believe that Catherine McDougald was =
born in Scotland. I have a letter from her family to her. This =
Duncan's parents were William Black and Catherine Ray who came from =
Scotland in 1752.
=20
Duncan and Catherine McDougald Black had sons: (1) William Black !! =
(born 1810) who had sons John (born 1840), Daniel (born 1842), and 5 =
daughters .
(2)John (born 1813) one sone Benjamin and daughter Christian=20
(3) Malcolm (see above notes)=20
(4) Hugh (see above notes)=20
=20
In 1944 a man names Louis Duncan Ray came from Detroit to the =
Fayetteville, NC area researching the Ray family. I have a lot of =
correspondence between him and my grandfather regarding the Black family =
descendants of William Black and Catherine Ray. I also have drafts of 3 =
other Ray descendants who were brothers of Catherine Ray. The Ray =
siblings were Jacobite exiles and came to Wilmington from Campbellton, =
Kintyre, Scotland. One summary sheet indicates the indentity of their =
parents and located them on the Isle of Skye. The correspondence =
indicates that all of this info was to be published along with the infor =
Mr. Ray assembled regarding additonal Ray siblings who migrated to =
Michigan and Canada. I have found no evidence of a book.
=20
The Black family and the Ray family were in the Harnett, Cumberland, =
Moore, Robinson, and Lee County area and the records I have show many =
cousins marrying cousins. =20
=20
Hope this helps you a bit.
=20
OTHER FAMILY NAMES I AM RESEARCHING ARE MCRAE, THOMPSON, JOHNSON (ALL IN =
THAT AREA)
PARKER, GIBSON, FLETCHER (MARLBORO CO. SC; SCOTLAND, ANSON, RICHMOND, =
ROBINSON COUNTY, NC)=20
MCPHERSON, RICHMOND, MURRAY, CURRIE, AND SLAUGHTER (ALAMANCE CO., =
CASWELL CO., ORANGE CO., AND PERSON CO., NC)=20
