Malvina Hannon was called Grandma Hannon/Hanna. I'm not sure about the
spelling of her surname - I also have it as Hannah & Hanna. She was from
Union Co. The Williams, Smalls, and Blacks all intermaried. The Hannahs &
Smalls stayed in Union Co.; the Blacks stayed in Mecklenburg Co.
Edward Franklin was a policeman in Charlotte, N.C.; he was a sergeant. He
was called "Pa." Uncle Jack Black was named after his dad, J. Amos Black.
When he was named after Amos, Edward Franklin got mad at Minnie; he didn't
like his dad. I don't know why.
According to what my grandmother, Irma O'Dessa Black Hall told me, Sarah
Armenta "Minnie" Williams was half Cherokee. Her mother was Nancy Jane
Little m. Jack Amos Williams. Nancy Jane and Jack Amos Williams are buried
at Clear Creek Baptist Church near Albemarle, NC. Went to the cemetery
there and got dates of their births and deaths from their tombstones.
The Blacks in my family are buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte,
Mecklenburg Co., NC. I have been there several times & I did get the dates
of their births and deaths from their tombstones. I do have Irma O'Dessa
Black Hall & Thomas Pickney Hall's marriage certificate and Tom Hall's war
records from World War I.
The information about the Collins family my mother had Billie Faye Sanders
to zerox out of their Family BIBLE for me before her death. The Collins
Family lived a great deal of the time (at least from the 1950's on) in and
around Greenville, SC.
Irma was better known as "Dessie" to her friends and family. Her mama,
"Minnie" died when she was very young. However, since she was the oldest
of the children, she had to help her Dad support the family. She quit
school only having a 6th grade education. She lied about her age to get a
job and started working in a factory; she told me she use to stand on a box
to work. Granny (Irma) was an extremely smart and talented woman. Her
family always came before herself; her grandchildren came before her. She
could sew anything. When I was a little girl, she made me Barbie doll
clothes. I'd go blackberry picking in the spring and Granny would make us
a blackberry cobbler. In the early summer, when the June Bugs came out,
she'd help me catch them & we'd fly them. When Kathy or I didn't behave,
she'd make us go pick a switch off of a tree; if it wasn't the right "kind"
she'd go pick one herself. She'd switch our legs good. Granny taught me
to embroidery some. She spit snuff; it was probably her only bad habit.
When Kathy & I were little, she use to tell us stories of when she was
little, stories her Granny (Nancy Jane) had told her. I only wish I'd
written down some of the things she told us. Some times she'd just plain
make up stories to keep us fascinated. One she made up was about the
picture she had hanging over her sofa - of the ladies in all the ballroom
dresses. While Mama worked, Granny took care of me & Kathy. She was always
there - as far back as my memory goes. We'd go to the grocery store every
Friday night, take Granny to her house, & Mama would roll Granny's hair.
On Sundays we drive back over to her house, pick her up and bring her back
to our house. She'd stay there all week. I remember on night waking up
and she was screaming; our dog, Candy, had gotten the rooms confused and
jumped in bed with Granny!!! When she lived close to our church, she use
to make me mayonaise, mustard, and ketchup sandwiches; how I use to love
them!!!
Kathleen Black died in childbirth. Kathleen Suzanne Howell Potts is named
after Kathleen Mock. Maude Black died in infancy.
Any help on this family would be appreciated. I'm stuck at William
Franklin Black...They lived at various times (which I still haven't been
able to determine) in Stanly Co., NC, Mecklenburg Co., NC, Union Co. NC &
SC.
