I can't answer the questions you have, but your email raised some for me. I
have some Blacks in my line -James Black was born in Scotland. He married in
PA. He lived after marriage in SC. There was a family group of Blacks
living in Charleston around 1800. I haven't sorted them out yet, but one
James Black had a father, David. (David still lived in Scotland.) James had
a wife named Susannah. He owned porperty in Edgarstown, MA. His son,
James, married Rachel Adams of MA (cousin of John Quincy Adams) The group
in SC owned Iron works, and some of them styled themselves "marriner". I
know Black is a common name, and I know from my SC group that James is one of
the more popular names in the Black family. But the Susannah is interesting.
And David. Anyway, you might want to keep in mind, for further resaerch,
that My James who had a father named David was of Kelso, Scotland and
Roxborough. There is quite a group of Blacks around there.
