The following is the information I have collected on William Black and Mary
S. Vaughn and their children. Williams parents were William S. Black and
Eleanor Beard.
I descend from another child in the family, Thomas Gallespie Black and his
wife Mary Polly Callahan. That information I have already shared.
Wm. Black and Mary S. Vaugh were married 4 Dec 1823 In TN Probalby Maurey
Co.
I don't have his death date but Mary died in Cass Co., Ill in 1881.

1 Thomas Gallespie Black b 15 Jun 1825 in TN and died in Scott Co., Ill.
2 Amanda C. Black b 25 May 1826, TN d 23 Jun 1837 Scott Co. ILL
3 Joseph Franklin Black b 23 Feb 1828
4 William Littleton Black b 8 Jun 1829 TN
5 Richamond Vaughn Black b 24 Oct 1833 TN
6 John Jefferson Black b 24 Oct 1833 Scott, ILL
7 Green Vardiman Black b 3 Aug 1836 Scott, Ill
8 James Berry Black b 9 Oct 1839 Scott, Ill
9 Mary J. Black b 13 Dec 1840 Ill Died 1874
10 John Black b 21 Dec 1844 Cass Co., Ill

All my notes were taken from two sources. The first being the United States
Biographical Dictionary pp 550- 551 found in the Santa Clara City Library,
Santa Clara, California. There is also a copy at Sutro Library in San
Francisco. Both are in the locked stacks and may not be coppied by xerox
any more. I coppied this material some 30 years ago.
My scond source is a book called "From Pioneer to Scientist" by Carl and
Bessie Black. The information was related to me by a distant cousin but I
am trying to get the book on Interliabrary loan if possible.
The list of children was sent to me by the distant cousin, however, they
were all listed in the above mentioned Biographical Dictionary.
Nores on the children with genealogical value.
Child 3 Joseph Franklin BlackL Probably born inn Maury Co., TN. He
invented a self raking reaper and finally a binding attachment which was
purchased by the Walter A. Wood Manufactguring Co. He was an architect and
lived in the village of Virginia. He married twice. No information on his
wives.
Child 4 William Libttleton Black: Probably born in Maury Co., TN He lived
in the Village of Virginia in Scott County IL. He worked as a farmer and
later joined his brother John in Black Brothers. His wife died in 1879.
They had three daughters.

Child 5: Probably born in Maurey Co TN. He served three years in the 114th
Illlinois infantry coming out as a Caption and for the next twenty years or
more was a farmer near Nebraska City.

Child #7 Greeb Vardiman Black. He is known as the father of Modern
Dentistry. He served a short time in the civil war, was a dentist in
Jacksonville, IL and president of the state board of dental examiners.

Charles 8 James Berry Black.
Graduated from Cumberland Presbyterian Academy, Virgina, Normal University
at Bloomington ILL, started teaching school at ninteen years of age. He
enlisted in 1861 as a private in Co. C., 3rd Illinois Cavalry, served only
two years, being in the battle of Pea Ridge, MS and with Sherman immediately
preceeding the siege of Vicksburg, was promoted to First Lt. and resigned
his commision in the spring of 1863 on account of Ill health. He rturned to
Virginia, ILL., and resumed teaching. Taught at institution for the blind,
in 1864-1866. He was later principal of the public schools of Virginia, IL.
He married 1 Jul 1867 to Miss Eliza J. Edwig, daughter of the late William
of Jacksonville. At the time this was written they had one daughter May,
age eight years.

Child 9 Mary J. Black. She married George A. Beard a farmer in Cass County
and died there. One account has her death as 1874 and antother as 1857.
I have not persued this but recognize it is a discrepency.

Child 10 John Black: Graduated from Pittsgurgh Commercial College and
married Maggie Blair 15 May 1866. Was in the mercantile business in
Virginia, Scott Co., IL since 1876.
This is all I have on this family. I have one more family I will be sending
along.
