SAMUEL BLACK was born July 2 1798 in Augusta Co. VA. Mildred Gaines, a
niece of Mrs Peter Cartwright, was born Oct 4 1802 in Charlotte Co. VA.
They were married Feb. 20 1822 near Hopkinsville KY, where their parents
had emigrated when they were quite young. They had one child in KY, and
moved to Sangamon Co. IL arriving Nov 19 1825, in what is now Cartwright
township, where they had two children, and in 1828 moved to Morgan Co.,
where seven children were born. Of their children--
ELIZA, b Dec 31 1824 KY m George Ragan, have seven children and reside
in Cass Co. IA. JAMES R. b July 5 1826 in Sangamon Co. IL, m Dec 13
1863 to Arvilla M McMurphy, who was born Nov 25 1833 in St Lawrence Co.,
NY. They have four children: VICTOR C., JENNIE M., IONA C. and ALBERT C.
and reside 1 1/4 miles north of Pleasant Plains, within a half a mile of
where he was born, on the farm of his grandfather, Rev Richard Gaines.
WILLIAM b April 5 1828 in Sangamon Co., m Jane Short and d 3 mos after
m.
SARAH b May 1 1833 in Morgan Co. IL m Tilman Sharp, has one child &
resides in Morgan Co. JOHN b Dec 3 1830 just before "the deep snow"m
Sarah Vaughn, have 3 chn: LOU ELLA, J.W. and J.R. & reside Morgan Co.
AMY b 5 Feb 1839 d Sept 8 1869. MARTHA G. b 4 FEB 1835 is unmarried &
resides with her parents. SAMUEL, jr. b Jun 27 1837 m Dec 2 1860 to MAry
Self, have two chn. W.E. and C.S. and reside in Morgan Co. MARY J. born
March 9 1842, m Sept 20 1861 to James Phillips. who died and she m Wm
Self and resides Cass Co. MILDRED b Jan 7 1845 m Samuel T Mattix has one
child and resides Morgan Co.
Samuel Black and his wife reside six miles north of Jacksonville,
surrounded by most of their children. Mr. Black made his first trip to
Sangamon Co. to move the mother of Rev. Peter Cartwright, He made,
altogether, seven round trips with a six horse team , when there were no
roads, in moving the Cartwright, Gaines and Black families.

WILLIAM BLACK, born about 1793 in Edinburgh Scotland. He came to Amrica
when young, landing at Philadelphia. A stone cutter by trade, he was
employed on some of the banks and other public buildings in that city,
finishing with a contract on Girard College. Anna Young was b Apr 6
1798 in the city of Philadelphia. William and Anna were married Dec 7
1820.
Their 9 children were born in Philadelphia, one of whom died young. Mr.
Black came to Springfield IL in the fall of 1839 and April 1840 his
family arrived and moved to a farm he had purhased six miles northeast
of Springfield. Of their 8 children--
JOHN, b Apr 12 1822, is unmarried. He went to Calif. in 1849 & now
resides in San Francisco. WILLIAM, b Apr 21 1824 in Philadelphia, was
drowned Apr 9 1849 in a slough near where the Gilman and Clinton RR
crosses the Sangamon River. HENRY, b Jul 23 1826, Philadelphia m May 3
1871 in Humboldt KS to Mrs. Artenecia A Chambers, whose maiden name was
Bradshaw. They have 2 chn: ANNA A. and BLANCHE, and reside Humboldt KS.
JAMES, b Jul 8 1828 Philadelphia was m Mar 2 1852 to Amanda A Cartmell.
They had one child & Mrs. Black died Jan 11 1854. Mr. Black was m Feb 5
1862 to Eliza A Cartmell. They have 4 children. Of his 5 Children--
WILLIAM L(by first m), WALTER B, ALVIN F, AMANDA M, and EMMA T. who
reside with their father on the farm settled by his father in 1840, 6 mi
NE of Springfield. GEORGE, b Aug 15 1830, m Sep 21 1858 to Sarah A
Mann.
They had 8 children, two of whom d young. MARY E, ELIZABETH, ANNIE L,
HENRY F, THOMAS M and CHARLES W. and reside on Round Prairie, 5 mi east
of Springfield, between the mouth of Spring Creek and South Fork. ANNA
E, b Sep 26 1832 m Jan 1 to Marion F Whitesides, 3 chn d in infancy,
Mary the eldest lives with her parents in Springfield IL. FRANCIS G, b
27 Feb 1835, m Oct 4 1859 to Elizabeth Hammond. They had two children,
JOHN W and ELIZA J and Mr. Black enlisted Aug 1862 in Co. G, 114th Ill.
Inf. for 3 years, and died of disease at Vicksburg, just after the
surrender by the rebels, July 4 1863. His remains were brought home and
interred near German Prairie Station. His children reside with their
mother, who later m A.R. Welch. WALTER C. b Sep 22 1837 enlisted in Co.
G, 114th Ill. Inf. for 3 yrs. Aug 5 1862, was twice slightly wounded,
served full time, and was honorable discharged Aug 10 1865. He was m 5
Feb 1866 to Permelia F Cartmell. They have 3 chn. ANNA C, FRANCIS E,
and ORA EVA, and reside 2 mi southeast of Riverton.
Margaret Allison lived as one of the William Black family in
Philadelphia
She came with this family to Sangamon Co. and d Sep 20 1840 aged 29 yrs.
William Black d Dec 15 1858 and his widow d Jul 25 1874, both on the
farm where they settled in 1840. Mr. Black became a member of the Scots
Thistle Society soon after his arrival in Philadelphia and remained a
member as long as he lived.
