Subject: (fwd) Daughters of American Revolution throw Children's Group out onto Street
Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 16:00:51 -0700 (PDT)
I'm sending this out to the list. I just received this today. I think this
is an important issue where we should all raise our voices. The author of
this post makes a good point by pointing out there are so few kids
interested in genealogy to begin with, but now they are trying to kick them
out?!?!? Read on:

>Last Friday, President General Kemper of the National Society Daughters of
>the American Revolution had the offices of the National Society Children of
>the American Revolution locked. She is demanding the NSCAR get out of the
>DAR National Headquarters, where it has been since the building was
>erected.
>
>At issue is Kemper's demand that the Children (CAR members range from birth
>to age 22) agree to sign a lease for their space that is renewable every
>year -- even though the CAR was granted the space they are in IN PERPETUITY
>decades ago.
>
>It gets worse: when DAR built Constitution Hall many decades ago (CAR HQ
>is in the Constitution Hall end of DAR HQ), the kids in CAR raised money on
>their own to help pay for the construction so they would have a permanent
>home of their own.
>
>This is an ugly act by the DAR President General. In my opinion, her
>actions will destroy the National Society of the Children of the American
>Revolution -- if this lock-out continues.
>
>We have so few kids in this country who take time to know their heritage
>and pay homage to their ancestors. That's why I'm posting this message
>here. The C.A.R.'s fight to exist and maintain a headquarters to house its
>geneaogical records is a fight that should be joined by all of us
>interested in tracing our roots. Below is more detail from a C.A.R.
>mailing list. If you are outraged by this and want to call the DAR to
>express your dismay, please call Mrs. Charles Kemper's office at
>202-628-1776. CAR headquarters' number is 202--638-3153. You will hear
>the lock-out message on that line:
>
>Sad news to report: In a conversation via telephone with CAR Senior
>National President Mrs. H.M. (Julia) Floyd tonight, I read the email sent
>by (Rob Warren) regarding the DAR's lockout of the N.S.C.A.R.
>from their headquarters in the DAR building. She confirmed that the email
>was indeed correct.
>
>Mrs. Floyd went on to say that even as late as yesterday she was still
>hopeful that things could be worked out amicably between the NSDAR and the
>N.S.C.A.R. This was despite the fact that she had spoken to C.A.R.'s
>attorney on Thursday and he had been told by DAR's attorney that DAR could
>not sign the latest contract given to them on Wednesday by C.A.R. Since
>C.A.R. could not sign the contract as proposed by DAR, C.A.R. offered to
>have a third-party neutral mediator be included in talks between the two
>organizations. DAR's attorney had no reply regarding mediation; he said he
>would contact his client.
>
>Phyllis (the C.A.R. Office Administrator) left the building after 6 o'clock
>Friday evening, June 13th. When she checked the post box today, there was
>a letter from Mrs. Kemper, dated yesterday, advising C.A.R. that the locks
>on the C.A.R. offices would be changed at the close of business yesterday.
> In response to the question of how Phyllis could gain access to the
>records and files which are in the locked N.S.C.A.R. Headquarters, I was
>told that it is Mrs. Floyd's understanding that our attorney will have to
>get a court order and that a sheriff will have to be present while Phyllis
>is in the office. Since we cannot operate as a business without things
>that are currently locked in the office, it seems to me that DAR has left
>us no choice but to get the court order.
>
>I know you will all join me in sending Mrs. Floyd and Phyllis our love and
>support in this troubled time...and keep them in your prayers, too. They
>will need our strength during the fight to come.
>Sincerely,
>
