Rufus Barringer was born in " Popular Grove" Cabarrus Co. NC 1821
His grandfather was Paulus Behringer ( John Paul Barringer)
who had emigrated from Wurtemburg German in 1743 .
Rufus got a good educcation graduated from the U. NC in 1842 studied Law and
in 1844 began practicing in Concord NC. In 1848 he was elected to the
state assembly and was reelected in 1850. in 1851 he was elected State
Senator. He ritired from Political life in 1852. e raised a company of
cavalry and entered the Confederate Army as it's captain in 1861. He rose
through the ranks and was nominated as Brig. Gen. He got command of a
brigade of cavalry . During the last year of the war he occasionally held
divisional command. . In 1865 he won the last substantial confederate
victory in Virginia at Chamberlain Run. In 1865 he was captured-- on the
way to prison he met Pres. Abraham Lincoln and then went to old Capitol
Prison. Then he was transferred to Fort Delaware. He took the Oath of
allegience in June and was released in July and reached his home in August.
His military career was over. It is claimed that he had fought in 76
actions , been wounded 3 times and had two horses shout under him. He
relocated in Charlotte and became active in the Republican Parth. He was
the rep. candidate for Lt. Governor in 1880.
He married in 1854 to Eugenia Morrison. She was sister to the wives of both
Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Gen. Daniel Harvey Hill.
in 1858 after his wife died he married Rosalie Chunn of Ashville and later
he married Margaret Long of Orange Co.
His wives gave him three sons the most prominent was Dr. Paul B. Barringer.
In 1884. He retired and lived on his estate. He died in Charlotte in Feb 3,
1895 and is buried there.
