Hi all. Found an interesting item while doing some Barringer research. This
is not my direct line, but I'm curious who Rufus is mentioning in this journal
entry. Can anyone shed some light? This entry refers to Dutch Buffalo Creek
in Cabarrus Co., NC which was once a part of Mecklenburg Co. This comes from
the Rufus Barringer Papers in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC in
Chapel Hill (Great collection here!!!) This may (or may not) be copyrighted
material so I will not be posting it to the webpage. I just thought that
someone may be able to use this info and also help fill me in on who Rufus's
father and grandfather were. Thanks!

November 1842
Thursday 10th. Last evening I went out home to see my cousin Eliza Miller.
Not one of the children there - just Pa and Ma. they seem anxious to have
their peace after spending a life in hard labor and economy to fit out their
children in comforable circumstance I know no man, considering his own
opportunities who has done more for his family than my father. His father came
from Hanover Germany having left his native county on account of his father
refusing to give him and acre of land for a vineyard. He settled at first in
Pa - then learned the English Language - and then came to this state and
entered land on Dutch Buffalo Creek in the eastern corner of this county - then
Mecklenburg. He was taken by times during the Revolution and carried to Camden
S.C. and imprisoned & obtained leave to return home a while and never went back
again. He married twice by his first wife he had two children by his second
wife when about 50 or 60 years old - she about 20 or 25, he had nine or ten.
Of these last my father was the oldest. He received a common Dutch & English
education and a tolerable property for those times. He remained in near the
old place his father lived on and then raised nearly all his children about
five years since he moved up here two miles and a half from town to be near his
kinship. He is getting quite old, but except for a short attack of the
Rheumatism, whould still be straight. His age is about 65 or so. he has given
all his daughters a good education and each of his sons would accept of it.
The daughters are all now married and setteled and all of the sons in business
except Victor and myself. Victor is still young. I will soon be twenty-two to
which fact Pa alluded this morning and made a remark that has had my anxiety
raised and will keep it on tip toe...[the rest is hard to make out]
